Parish Council Minutes

April 25, 2007

Attendees: Reverend Dennis Bailey, Phil Johnson, Sue Johnson, Debbie Cotting, George Hayden, Perry Hayden, Barbara Langill, and Sandi Watson; Guests attending were Dan Johnson, Judy Johnson, and Mark Meehl.

Perry Hayden opened the meeting at 7:10 p.m. with a meditation. Minutes from the previous meeting on March 28 were approved.

 

Pastorís Report:

Reverend Bailey reported that the new phone system has been installed.

The last Confirmation class will be held on May 6 and 7. The confirmands will meet with the Diaconate on May 6 and share their papers from Confirmation class.

Confirmation Sunday will be May 13.

Rev. Bailey will attend the General Synod of the United Church of Christ and the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Conference June 21 through 27 in Hartford, Connecticut. Delegates from Centre Church who will also attend are Kathi Martin, Bill Seelig, and George Hayden.

 

Ministry Team reports:

Christian Education Ministries: Barbara said that eight members of the High School Youth Group participated in the Mission trip in April. The Youth Group volunteered at food pantries, clothing banks, shelters, and at the SERRV warehouse and clothing distribution center in Pennsylvania. They also traveled to Washington D.C., where they went to the Holocaust Museum, visited the Vietnam, Korean and WWII Memorials, and met with Congressman John Tierney.

Barbara will attend a forum about Youth Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary the first week in May.

Barbara and Jill will participate in workshops on Christian Education at the Craigville Conference Center (UCC) on May 10.

The Middle School Youth Group overnight at the church/whitewater rafting trip will be May 4 and 5.

The High School Youth Group will participate in the World Vision Thirty Hour Famine, to raise awareness of hunger issues and to raise money for World Visionís work, on May 11 and 12.

The Youth Group trip to Laser Quest has been rescheduled for May 25.

Moderator: The meeting to present the church budget to the congregation will be Sunday, June 10, following the worship service.

The annual meeting will be held on Sunday, September 23, after worship. Topics for the annual meeting include: amendments to bylaws, a presentation by the Planned Giving team, approval of new officers and ministry team chairs, and recognition of 50-year members.

Stewardship Ministry: Debbie listed the following dates for milestones in the stewardship drive:

Week of May 10

Debbie will send a letter about stewardship to the congregation.

Week of May 16

Rev. Bailey will send a letter about stewardship to the congregation.

May 6 through 19

Church members will host coffee hours, to share fellowship and thoughts about stewardship.

May 20

Stewardship Sunday, kicking off the campaign and the passing of the stewardship packets.

June 2

All pledge cards will be due.

June 3

Celebration Sunday

 

Debbie and Phil then asked Parish Council to complete their pledge cards for the next year. These early commitments, along with those from the Stewardship Ministry team, will be announced as the initial lead gifts during the service on May 6th to kick off this yearsí campaign. The remaining lead gifts, including those from Diaconate and Planned Giving, will be announced on May 20, the day the packet passing begins.

Financial Secretary/Treasurer reports: Sue presented a report of contributions to date and noted that the fiscal year closes on June 30. Dwight presented a report of expenditures for July 2006 through April 2007.

Mark Meehl: Mark, who is president of the choir, said that the choir members like their new robes. Choir members are discussing the possibility of recording a CD as a fundraiser.

Mark also asked Council to consider his request for $335 to attend the National Gathering of the UCC Coalition for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) Concerns. This meeting will be part of the UCC General Synod in Hartford in June. Council members agreed to consider his request and are looking into ways to provide funding.

Education Ministry: Perry has heard from some of the confirmation class members that they are pleased with the classes and learning a lot. Perry also said that Mrs. Lauzon, who teaches at Tower Day School, will be retiring after 29 years as a teacher.

Diaconate: George said that the rehearsal for Confirmation Sunday will be held on Saturday, May 12, from noon to 1:30. Confirmation Sunday is scheduled for May 12. At their next meeting on May 14, the Diaconate will discuss the summer worship schedule.

Finance Ministry: Phil said that he is hoping the Finance Ministry team will come together in the early fall. The Planned Giving team continues to learn approaches for developing planned giving programs and will present some ideas to the congregation in September, at the annual meeting.

 

Next Meeting: The next meeting of Parish Council is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the Pastorís office.
