October 25, 2005

The moderator began the meeting at 7:10 P.M. In attendance were Phil Johnson, Chris Gehret, Barbara Langill, Susan Lambe, Linda Ladd, Bruce Gist, George Hayden, Hugh Penney and Mike Dunfee. Guests at the meeting were Phil Triffletti and Randy Russell. George Hayden offered the meditation. Minutes from the September meeting were approved.

Phil reviewed the ONA conversation that was held after church on October 9th. 100 members attended that meeting, and 30 people spoke. Discussion on whether we should hold another forum before moving the ONA question ensued. Mike felt that the congregation seemed ready to get on with the task and vote on the question. It was decided that further discussion and the actual vote would take place on December 11th after church. The motion will be put on the floor by the Council for review. The question will be moved after discussion takes place. The motion presented on December 11th will contain the actual definition of what we are voting on. Next, the 2nd draft of the proposed Mission Statement was discussed at length. Some changes were made, and a 3rd draft was created. Council hopes to include the new mission statement in the upcoming church directory

Randy led a session on updating our church strategy map. We had an informative and in-depth discussion on our church’s customers, programs and committees.

Stewardship update- Hugh informed us that lead calls are being conducted and the initial responses are positive. Dedication Sunday will be held on November 6th. Our stewardship consultant, Bill Van der Wyden will preach that day. The Tower Exchange Group will be recognized on that Sunday for their many years of service. Letters are currently being mailed to the congregation; it should be noted that this is a six-month campaign and this first portion of it ends on November 20th. Pledges made now are for the January to June period. In the spring, pledges for next year will be made to coincide with our new fiscal year, which will begin in June 2006.

Phil discussed transitioning all officers and committee members to our new fiscal calendar. We will also need to find a moderator-in-training before Annual Meeting. Future council meeting dates were discussed and revised.

Pastor’s Report- Mike reported that in 2005 he has performed 3 weddings so far and has 2 to go. This year’s confirmation class will begin in January. Jeff Langill and Perry Hayden will assist Mike. New members on the Worship team include Michelle Hagerty and Pat Summerer. The Christmas concert this year will be held on December 18th. A church information seminar for new members will be held on November 6th after worship from 11:30- 1:30. An MBA meeting will be held on October 30th in Needham, 2 delegates are needed.

Christian Ed report- Barbara informed us that the 5th – 7th grade youth groups raised $600 for My Brother’s Table through Walk for Hunger pledges. The Youth Groups will be collecting turkeys for Haven from Hunger before Thanksgiving, and holding a pumpkin carving contest this weekend with proceeds to benefit Cradles to Crayons. After church on October 30th, A METCO movie will be shown. There will be an Advent Workshop/Luncheon after church on December 4th. The Christmas pageant will be held on December 18th this year. Last week’s overnight visit to Heifer Global Village was successful, and the participants will be helping Sandi Watson with the upcoming Heifer marketplace.

Missions update- Chris reported that 30 cell phones have been collected for HAWC to date. Due to the interest in the project, the collection will continue. The next missions meeting will take place on Tuesday night to discuss support for Church World Services hurricane relief. The moderator adjourned the meeting at 9:40 P.M. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, November 22nd at 7:00 P.M.
