Parish Council Minutes

February 23, 2004

The moderator began the meeting at 7:10 P.M. Present were Phil Johnson, Linda Ladd, George Hayden, Susan Lambe, Barbara Langill, Raymond Patch, Bill Newell, Hugh Penney and Bruce Gist. Randy Russell from the Stewardship Commission joined the meeting for our guest speaker’s presentation. Susan Lambe offered the meditation.

Nominating Commission: Bill Newell nominated the following 5 people to fill current vacancies:
- Al Johnson: Investments- 3 years
- Emily Jordan- Ushers- 3 years
- Chris Parker- Stewardship- 1 year
- Phil Triffletti- Worship team- 3 years
- Steve Furey- Properties- 3 years
These nominations were seconded and approved.

Moderator’s Report: Phil informed Council that Ed Hoyt from the Mass. U.C.C. would be joining us for a brainstorming session on stewardship at CCC. He also set a date for an All -Commission meeting to discuss CCC’s new direction, everyone’s role in church growth, input from all church members and a new welcoming and hospitality program.

Our guest speaker for the evening was Ed Hoyt, the acting Associate Conference Minister for Stewardship and Financial Development. He wanted to first establish what our goals for this meeting were. Council informed him that we want to establish a sense of financial security for our church that would include the involvement of all members. The other important goal is to grow our membership, to reverse our ‘dying church’ trend. Ed told us that Stewardship must be connected with joy; Jesus said, "Where your money is, there will be your heart." The group discussed the story of Zacchaeus , and engaged in some group exercises and discussions about money. Ed said we must help people see the faith connection to money and stewardship. Our past approaches to stewardship have been too short-term, we have only talked about the need to build an endowment, not taken any action. Our revenues from Tower Day School have actually been what has kept the church solvent. Ed stressed the need to strive for a ‘Modern Day Tithe’ of 5% in our stewardship campaign. He has found that if we find more ways to comfortably talk about money, it will bring us all closer to the gospel and to each other. We all need to talk about Missons and about our own Faith Journeys. Ed also informed Raymond of an upcoming Pastoral Excellence Program on the subject of money. This portion of the meeting concluded at 9:35 P.M.

Phil gave an update on the pledge that was given to help us achieve these goals. The $10,000 pledge has brought in 3 additional pledges totaling $5,600, and another pledge to match up to fifty $100 donations. He will contact Steve Silver of the UCC to help us with Planned Giving. Raymond will invite Nancy Taylor, President of Mass. UCC, to preach for us and stay after church to help us with our membership and financial concerns. Raymond gave readings on the topics "Inspiring Generosity," and "Understanding Mission" to council members for their review.

The next Parish Council meeting will be Tuesday, March 23rd.
